Abstract

The number of German companies being acquired by Chinese investors is continuously growing. Despite the apparent manageable nature of the number of takeovers, the accompanying feeling of uncertainty and worry amongst many Germans is considerable. It is often assumed that some sort of Chinese government master plan lies behind the phenomenon. An examination of the objectives of these investments makes it clear that such suspicions are not to be dismissed out of hand. However, observations also show that the processes of investment are dynamic and complex and investments made by the People’s Republic of China do not only have the perceived manifold negative effects but can also have positive effects. This article summarises the reasons for these company acquisitions and also provides an overview of experiences with this group of investors, in particular among those concerned with co-determination. In the course of this it rapidly becomes evident that experiences at the level of the economy as a whole can differ from the individual experiences of particular companies.
