Abstract

The current debate about the future of work and sustainable development includes two main discourse strands. The one favours the redistribution of socially secured and paid work through work-time reduction and at the same time demands a new evaluation of the meaning of work: the public’s understanding of work has to be enhanced to recognize the value of non-paid but socially necessary work. This consideration has gained some academic recognition but very little in the public media or politics. The other approach promotes so-called ‘green jobs’ – i.e. environmentally friendly and socially oriented jobs – as an important means towards solving the present multiple crises. This strategy is supported by the UN, some NGOs and trade unions and also national environmental ministries. The article presents the discursive contexts of both approaches and discusses their strengths and weaknesses and the political potential.
