Abstract

An added dimension To produce an image of an object in three dimensions it's usually necessary to measure it from multiple viewpoints or to scan it section-by-section. Now Jianwei Miao and colleagues have proposed a way of producing 3D images at the nanoscale from a single exposure using a monochromatic incident beam. Dubbed ankylography (from the Greek ankylos for 'curved' and graphein for 'writing'), the new technique is similar to X-ray diffraction microscopy, but with the two-dimensional diffraction pattern measured over a spherical surface centred on the target: if the conditions are right, this pattern can then be used to reconstruct a complete 3D structure from the single measurement. With further development and advances in detector technology, ankylography could become a useful tool in the physical and life sciences.
