Abstract

Regulatory RNAs go to seed Vernalization, the process by which plants acquire the ability to flower on cue in the spring following exposure to winter cold, is a key adaptive trait in plants that has a significant impact on agricultural practices. The Arabidopsis floral repressor FLC is silenced by vernalization in a process mediated by Polycomb regulatory proteins. Now non-coding antisense RNA transcripts of FLC are shown to be present in cold-treated seeds and responsive to temperature changes, suggesting a possible role in cold sensing and FLC silencing. Antisense transcription events of this type, originating from 3′ ends of genes, might be a general mechanism of regulating the corresponding sense transcription.
