Acceleration of Greenland ice mass loss in spring 2004

Abstract

GRACE notes A new survey of the Greenland ice sheet using fluctuations in the gravitational field from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellites reveals a dramatic acceleration in the rate of loss of ice mass. There was a more-than twofold increase in the rate of mass loss during May 2004–April 2006, relative to the two previous years. This acceleration occurred mainly in the southern part of the ice sheet. These findings are in line with an independent analysis of the GRACE data and with recent suggestions that the ice sheet responds more quickly to climate perturbations than previously thought.
