Abstract

The article is an introduction to Darb 1718 Contemporary Art and Culture Center in Old Cairo, Egypt: a center founded in 2008, housing indoor and outdoor spaces for cultural events - art exhibitions, performing arts, cinema... - and also acting as a welcoming artist residence. The center's background, vision, mission and activities, are presented, along with its ambition to advance the flourishing contemporary art scene in Egypt, as well as to promote social change, by having an impact on the surrounding, rundown historical neighbourhood.
