I costi fissi: il capitolo mancante nella «storia» della doppia marginalizzazione

Abstract

La doppia marginalizzazione, concetto assai familiare tra gli studenti di economia industriale e di antitrust, offre un’automatica e benevola giustificazione a concentrazioni di natura verticale. Secondo questa concezione, un’integrazione verticale, che riconduce sotto un unico centro di profitto unità produttive prima autonome, porterebbe a una riduzione dei prezzi grazie all’eliminazione di esternalità. Questa ricostruzione trascura però un elemento fondamentale associato a una concentrazione verticale: la modifica della struttura dei costi, giacché diminuiscono quelli variabili e aumentano quelli fissi. Se teniamo conto di questa circostanza, l’eliminazione della doppia intermediazione, dovuta a una concentrazione di natura verticale, perde gran parte dei suoi virtuosi effetti: essi rimangono confinati solo a casi sostanzialmente irrilevanti per la normale pratica antitrust.
