Abstract

El documento analiza algunos de los efectos potenciales del cambio climático sobre el sector agropecuario de Guatemala. En particular, se estiman los impactos sobre la renta de la tierra de los hogares rurales guatemaltecos utilizando un enfoque ricardiano. Los resultados obtenidos indican que la renta de la tierra para los hogares guatemaltecos es sensible al clima. Un incremento marginal en la temperatura promedio anual de un grado centígrado reduce la renta de la tierra en aproximadamente seis dólares. En el estudio también se incluyen los posibles impactos derivados de cambios futuros en el clima, los cuales muestran un escenario poco alentador sobre los ingresos provenientes de la renta de la tierra para los hogares rurales de Guatemala. Los impactos de las proyecciones futuras predicen efectos negativos que van desde el 7% hasta cerca del 67% en el monto percibido por concepto de renta de la tierra, lo anterior representaría para los hogares pobres un impacto no menor al 11% en el ingreso percibido por esta fuente./ This paper examines some of the potential effects of climate change on agriculture in Guatemala. In particular, we estimate the impacts on land rent of Guatemalan rural households, using a Ricardian approach. The results indicate that the land rent for Guatemalan rural households is sensitive to climate. A marginal increase in the average temperature of one degree Celsius reduces the land rent in about six dollars. The study also includes the potential impacts of future climate changes, which show a bleak scenario on the income obtained from land rent for rural households in Guatemala. The impacts of future projections predict negative effects ranging from 7% to about 67% in the amount received from the land rent; this represents an impact not smaller than 11% on the income received from this source.
