Optimal Sequential Decisions and the Content of the Fourth-and-Goal Conference

Abstract

During fourth-and-goal conferences toward the end of very close football games, teams sometimes decide whether to kick a field goal or try for a touchdown. Such conferences should never involve this subject matter.
