A Microcomputer-Based Decision Support System for Scheduling Umpires in the American Baseball League

Abstract

Umpire scheduling in the American Baseball League is a complex, multicriteria optimization problem. It is ideally suited for an interactive decision support system that incorporates optimization techniques, heuristic rules, and human judgment. A microcomputer-based system with these characteristics has significantly reduced the time needed to create good schedules and has improved their quality.
