Abstract

India has become world renowned as a destination for outsourced back-office operations. This fact is due to a number of contextual specifics that have provided India with a comparative advantage over other potential outsourcing destinations. This essay discusses the role of Information Technology (IT) in the development and maintenance of this advantage. India's persistent comparative advantage and resultant success as the "back office of the world", realised through continued investment in areas that directly and indirectly impact the proliferation of information technology, have had beneficial social and economic impacts. Given recent economic trends, social conditions and the increasing importance of IT in local and global business, India is poised to benefit considerably and achieve broad-based improvements in social and economic development.
