Abstract

Conventionally, an increased presence of women in part-time work has been linked in the relevant literature with the need to reconcile family life with work. However, in the context of the current economic recession different employment patterns have been observed. This article seeks to analyse the patterns of participation and involuntariness in part-time employment from a gender perspective. We focus on identifying the determinant factors in working part-time in relation to personal characteristics, job characteristics and major economic theories. Our findings reveal that involuntariness has increased sharply among men due, among other issues, to workforce adjustments introduced as a result of the economic recession.
