Structural dynamics and evolutionary change

Abstract

•The paper compares the structural and evolutionary approaches to economic change.•The distinct intellectual origins and analytical crossovers of the two approaches are discussed.•It is argued that recent developments in evolutionary economics (such as sectoral differentiation as a bridge between the micro and macro points of view) point to issues that are characteristic of the structural approach.•It is argued that the structural approaches have shown increasing interest for transitional paths (sequences of connected transformation stages).•The analysis of causal processes leading to economic change requires integration of the structural and evolutionary approaches to highlight the proportionality (complementarity) conditions and context dependence of economic change.
