Chapter 24 Review of Port Performance Approaches and a Supply Chain Framework to Port Performance Benchmarking

Abstract

Most practical and theoretical approaches to port performance measurement benchmarking are reducible to three broad categories: performance metrics and index methods, economic impact studies and efficiency frontier approaches. However, despite the plethora of performance models and measurement systems, an integrative benchmarking approach is seldom adopted and performance measurements are often fragmented and biased towards sea access. This paper proposes an integrative framework to port performance by conceptualising ports from a logistics and supply chain management (SCM) approach. The model was tested and improved in a reported survey inquiry. Examples and hypothetical case studies are also presented for illustration.
