Recognition of passive cooling techniques

Abstract

Passive cooling techniques in buildings have been employed successfully for many years in hot and hot-humid climates. The advances in the production of electricity and associated technologies have encouraged the use of mechanical cooling systems including air conditioning. Such systems have pushed aside traditional passive cooling techniques for some time due to their quick benefits. But their high initial and running costs lead to realization that Traditional passive cooling techniques are potentially cheaper and more effective way of achieving thermal comfort. In this paper benefits of traditional architecture will be discussed and passive cooling techniques adopted in the construction of a hospital in the city of Hyderabad, Pakistan will also be discussed along with its social and cultural benefits.
