Onsager-Casimir reciprocity relations for open gaseous systems at arbitrary rarefaction

Abstract

A new statistical approach to the nonequilibrium thermodynamics is worked out. The approach is based on general properties of the Boltzmann equation and boundary condition for the distribution function. It allows to obtain the Onsager-Casimir reciprocity relations for open gaseous systems at any rarefaction including situations when the local equilibrium is broken. Thus, in contrast to the conventional opinion, it is shown that an application of the main results of non-equilibrium thermodynamics can be extended to systems not being in the local equilibrium
