Abstract

We investigate the instabilities which can occur when a layer of a mixture of two miscible fluids in a porous medium is heated from below or from above. We find that either a stationary instability or an oscillatory instability can occur as the first bifurcation depending on the sign and the magnitude of the Soret coefficient. The possibility of an oscillatory convective instability when heating is done from above is pointed out for the first time. In addition, we discuss the mechanism of these instabilities using energy balance considerations.
