Role of city sustainability in utilizing the natural resources

Abstract

This study's primary objective is to assess the impact of a city's sustainability index on the production of green electricity within a selection of 30 Chinese cities spanning the timeframe from 2000 to 2020. The findings unequivocally demonstrate that cities with a strong commitment to sustainability exhibit a marked propensity for expanding their sustainable electricity generation infrastructure. Moreover, the research underscores the pivotal role played by the development of information and communication technology in facilitating sustainable electricity production across these Chinese urban centers. Conversely, variables such as population growth, industrialization, tourism appeal, and poverty rates emerge as significant hindrances to the advancement of sustainable electricity generation in these cities. The implications gleaned from these findings point to a range of actionable policies, including the cultivation of green financial markets within sustainable cities, the digital transformation of urban landscapes, the expansion of ecotourism initiatives, and the implementation of poverty alleviation strategies in the remote regions of China.
