A quantitative clustering analysis of paratransit route typology and operating attributes in Cape Town

Abstract

•Geospatial and operational data were collected for more than 500 paratransit routes in Cape Town.•A clustering algorithm was used to classify the routes in terms of their operational attributes.•20% of routes were classified as trunk routes, 30% as intermediate routes and 50% as feeder/distributor routes.•44% of the feeder/distributor routes, 22% of all routes, have a trip-end in one of the busiest public transport interchanges.•These routes, all less than 10 km, can perform a feeder/distributor role in a hybrid integrated public transport network.
