Perceptions of corporate productivity practices

Abstract

Perceptual (5-point Likert-type) measures of 27 corporate productivity improvement practices are obtained from a sample of 70 companies. Rankings of the extent of emphasis placed on each productivity practice variable are then tabulated for overall sample as well as for sub-samples controlling for charter, ownership and size. Similarities as well as interesting differences are found between these sub-groups. Companies (except for those jointly-owned) tend to highly emphasize cost reduction and quality of product/service in their productivity improvement efforts. The use of consultants, special project studies, functional specialization by way of a 'productivity manager' and productivity indicators are given little emphasis.
