Western quality at a low price: Cleaning up in Poland?

Abstract

Poland's economic reform programme began on 1 January 1990 and has been radical and swift. The response from the West has been slower, but recently some major new joint ventures have been announced. Paul Rogers and Paul Matthews describe the attractive business opportunities that exist for West European companies in Poland, aided by huge markets, valuable production capacity to be acquired and a cheap, skilled workforce. But this is no place to make a fast buck; doing business is difficult when so much information and facilities are missing. Nonetheless, there are pressing reasons for acting now and getting a head start on the competition.
