Transcultural management: Allowing employees to be enterprising -- Democratically

Abstract

In this article, Albert Koopman describes a revolution which he started five years ago in Cashbuild Cash and Carry, a South African company of which he is Managing Director. Although the company was doing well, he felt that without a total belief or total value system in the organization, the company needed to create a climate in which people would be willingly productive -- and for this they needed the freedom to act. Five principles were established to fire this participative process at base. The end result is a re-establishment of greater humanity in the organization, with noticeable increases in productivity.
