Strategies for survival in European financial markets

Abstract

The European Commission's Second Banking Directive has opened European financial markets to much more competition. Maureen O'Hara looks at the strategies financial firms in Europe can adopt and the likely success of their choices. She cites the painful lessons of the American experience and considers non-cooperative as well as alliance strategies for firms as well as the possible effects of deregulation on the whole financial system itself.
