Abstract

This article focuses on the measures companies take -- in the West and in Japan -- to move products faster through their research and development phases. In particular, it examines the factors determining the speed of delivery of new or improved products, including science push and science pull. It also looks at the relative strengths of the West and Japan in R and D, and reports the results of a survey of actions taken by Western and Japanese companies to improve their R and D lead-time performance. Finally, Laurens van den Muyzenberg presents "MARIS", an analytical method which management can use to select the most effective way of increasing the speed with which R and D activities deliver new products and processes. The article represents the experience gained by a consulting company acting as advisors to top management in the R and D field, and uses data from a survey carried out in Western Europe. It is based on a paper delivered in May 1988 in Tokyo at the International Conference on Strategic R and D Management.
