French banks and European strategy

Abstract

This article by Bernard Marois analyses the European strategies of French banks with the background of the Single European Market. In the early 1990s, the banks adopted a variety of strategies to 'Europeanise', but generally the model of a Europe-wide universal bank failed. In the same period, their experiences with acquisitions as an expansion technique were mostly unrewarding. More recently, cross-border co-operative alliances have proved easier and more successful, although here too there are pitfalls. The current picture is still a variety of European strategies by the French banks, with perhaps more emphasis on flexibility. The introduction of the Single Currency in 1999 is likely to encourage even more turmoil and need for response in banking strategy.
