Abstract

•The ES concept can function as a boundary object for better policy integration.•Identifying actors’ rationales and values help to understand governance and policy.•Governance needs information about societal aspects of ecosystem services.•Experimentation, debate and learning enhance policy adaptivity and embeddedness.
