Relationship between internet attitude and internet self-efficacy: ICT competence and network interaction as mediators

Abstract

Exploring mechanisms to enhance students’ internet self-efficacy is of great importance for improving students’ online learning. This study examined the relationship between internet attitude and internet self-efficacy along with the mediating roles of information and communication technologies (ICT) competence and network interaction. The sample included 931 K-12 students from 18 classes in Hubei Province, China. Multilevel regression analysis revealed that ICT competence and network interaction play critical and comparable mediating roles in the relationship between internet attitude and self-efficacy, accounting for about half of the total effects. These findings indicate that improving student ICT competence and facilitating their network interactions during the learning process are effective alternative ways to develop K-12 students’ internet self-efficacy.
