Unveiling magnetospheric substorm dynamics: Exploring the crackling noise features of auroral electrojet bursts

Abstract

The Earth’s magnetosphere/ionosphere system shows a very complex dynamics in response to solar wind and interplanetary medium changes. This complex dynamics is particularly evident during the magnetospheric substorms, being characterized by scale-free energy relaxations and an avalanche-like dynamics. Here, we make a step forward in the comprehension of the Earth’s magnetospheric substorm dynamics. In detail by analyzing the scaling features of the bursts of the auroral electrojet AL-index we show how these bursts follow the general scaling theory proposed for the critical avalanche profile in crackling noise. The observed scaling features of avalanche size, duration and the collapse of the avalanche profile are also consistent with the spectral properties of AL-index, characterized by a power-law spectral density. Furthermore, the universality class of the observed AL-index avalanche character is in agreement with the one of front-propagation models in random media (e.g., random field Ising model). Lastly, the relevance of these results within the context of the dynamics of magnetospheric plasma sheet is discussed.
