Avoiding excessive greenhouse effect by delayed emission of carbon dioxide from the fossil-fuel cycle

Abstract

In order to mitigate substantially the atmospheric CO2 peak, responsible for the greenhouse effect, it is proposed to sequester carbon dioxide (CO2) from the fossil-fuel cycle and to store it in the form of CO2 dry ice in huge, thermally insulated, leaky repositories to delay the emission of CO2 into the atmosphere. It is estimated that a sphere of CO2 dry ice, with a diameter of 400 m and properly insulated by a 2 m thick layer of insulating material, will be sublimited completely in a time span of a few millenia. Since the recovery time of the atmosphere due to an anthropogenic surplus of CO2 inventory is much shorter than this time interval (about 200 years), the atmospheric CO2 peak the scientific community is afraid of, will be delayed and damped drastically.
