Comportamiento paradójico de la banca extranjera en América Latina

Abstract

Durante la década de 1990 la presencia de la banca extranjera en América Latina creció notablemente. La estabilidad macroeconómica y las reformas económicas, en particular la liberalización del mercado de capitales y la liberalización financiera, crearon condiciones atractivas para los bancos que buscaban economías de escala y crecimiento en todo el mundo. Al mismo tiempo, los gobiernos esperaban que la entrada de los bancos extranjeros proporcionara una solución a la necesidad de aumentar el capital que participaba en el sistema y representara una garantía frente al riesgo sistémico. Los esfuerzos por atraer inversiones extranjeras coincidieron con la estrategia de los participantes principales que apuntaba a su transformación en bancos globales. Tras haberse producido la entrada inicial, vale la pena analizar qué repercusiones ha tenido en el comportamiento del sistema financiero. La principal conclusión es que a nivel de eficiencia microeconómica los resultados para la región son positivos, pero que esto contrasta con el impacto macroeconómico.
