Relación entre el capital humano y el producto en Ecuador: el rol de las políticas educativas

Abstract

El objetivo de esta investigación es examinar la relación entre el capital humano y el producto de Ecuador mediante técnicas de cointegración. Utilizamos datos compilados por el Banco Mundial en los Indicadores del Desarrollo (2017) y por Barro y Lee (2013) del periodo 1982-2015. A pesar de la inestabilidad de las políticas educativas en este país, los resultados son consistentes con el enfoque del modelo de crecimiento endógeno desarrollado por Lucas (1988). Encontramos que el capital humano medido por la tasa de alfabetización y el capital físico medido por la formación bruta de capital fijo tienen una relación estable de largo plazo y de corto plazo con el producto en este país. Finalmente, encontramos que existe causalidad Granger (1988) unidireccional desde el capital humano al producto, y desde el capital humano al capital físico. Una implicación de política económica derivada de esta investigación es que un aumento de la inversión en las dotaciones de la fuerza laboral permite aumentar el producto y el capital físico
