On Measuring the Contribution of Human Capital to Agricultural Production

Abstract

The issue of the appropriate balance in emphasis between efficient choice of technology and efficient use of the chosen technology has, in recent years, received too little attention-it being granted, erroneously, that people can operate the technology efficiently. In this context, the importance of human capital need not be overemphasized here. This paper analyses a methodology to measure the contribution of human capital to agricultural production. The workability of the model is examined with the cross section data from the Philippines covering the period 1984-85. The results show that there are wide variations in the contribution of human capital to production. The study also makes an attempt to identify the factors causing such variations.
