Regionale Innovationssysteme im Vergleich

Technological and organizational progress is the major driving force behind economic growth. Innovation systems are a crucial factor in implementing innovations. These include all organizations and institutions, for example, companies, universities, and research institutes, involved in creating, disseminating, and applying scientific or technological knowledge. Innovation systems have a strong regional focus, particularly as far as knowledge transfer and cooperation between various stakeholders are concerned. Taking the region of Darmstadt and several comparable regions as examples, the present paper outlines how regional innovation systems can be analyzed using various indicators. The findings show that the region of Darmstadt is well above the German average of innovation performance and, according to some indicators, it even surpasses leading regions such as Stuttgart and Munich. However, this is not fully reflected in its economic performance. Technologischer und organisatorischer Fortschritt sind die wesentlichen Treiber von Wirtschaftswachstum. Für die Umsetzung von Innovationen sind sogenannte Innovationssysteme von entscheidender Bedeutung. Darunter wird die Gesamtheit an Organisationen und Institutionen, die an der Erschaffung, Verbreitung und Anwendung wissenschaftlichen oder technologischen Wissens beteiligt sind sowie deren Verknüpfungen verstanden. Innovationssysteme haben eine starke regionale Komponente, insbesondere was den Wissenstransfer und die Kooperation verschiedener Akteure betrifft. Diese Studie skizziert am Beispiel der Region Darmstadt und einiger Vergleichsregionen, wie regionale Innovationssysteme anhand verschiedener Indikatoren analysiert werden können. Im Ergebnis zeigt sich, dass die Region Darmstadt hinsichtlich der Innovationsleistung deutlich über dem deutschen Durchschnitt liegt und bei einigen Indikatoren sogar führende Regionen wie Stuttgart und München übertrifft. Allerdings schlägt sich dies nicht in vollem Umfang in der ökonomischen Leistungsfähigkeit nieder.
