Contribution à une histoire de l’externalisation:le cas Renault (1945-1975)

Abstract

(VF)Les principaux motifs d’externalisation évoqués vont du fonctionnalisme (recherche de l’efficience) à l’institutionnalisme (recherche de légitimité). Alors que la plupart des études empiriques conduites sur ce sujet ont été réalisées à l’aide de sources secondaires et souvent en fonction d’un dessein plus hypothético-déductif qu’inductif, nous proposons a contrario une application stricte de la méthode historique et l’exploitation de sources primaires, les archives Renault. Cela nous conduit à deux principaux résultats:la mise en évidence d’une multiplicité et d’une instabilité des facteurs explicatifs de la décision d’intégration /désintégration verticale et le constat d’une tendance de long terme qui semble se dégager en faveur de l’externalisation.(VA)Theoretical explanations of the decision to outsource typically range from functionalism (search for efficiency) to institutionalism (search for legitimacy). Up to date, most empirical studies on the subject have been carried out relying on secondary data sources and are generally inspired by deductive rather than inductive methodology. The case history related in the present article is based on the exploitation of primary sources, which stem from the Renault archives. From this analysis, we are able to draw two main conclusions: the first concerns the multiplicity and instability of the factors explaining the decision to implement outsourcing/ vertical disintegration; the second highlights the emergence of a long-term trend in favour of outsourcing.
