Beyond Borders: Exploring International Students Satisfaction. The case of an Eastern European University

Abstract

In a highly competitive environment, internationalization is a key driver for higher education development. Internationalization of universities is shaped by globalization, emerging economic blocs, and digital transformation. In this context, universities prioritize offering international students a satisfactory learning and cultural experience as part of their internationalization strategies. This study explores the educational and socio-cultural experiences of international students at Ovidius University of Constanta, Romania, a large multidisciplinary higher education institution in the Black Sea region. Two online surveys conducted in 2022 and 2023 assessed student satisfaction to improve university strategies. Results showed overall satisfactory educational services and positive interactions with other international and local students, professors, and administration. However, respondents identified areas for improvement, including better internet connection, laboratory equipment, spaces for sports, followed by cafeteria/canteen services and accommodation. These findings highlight the importance of continuously enhancing services to meet the needs of international students and support the university's internationalization goals.
