Kurz zum Klima: Wie die Axt im Walde? Weltweite Waldflächen und Tropenholz

Abstract

Die Generalversammlung der Vereinten Nationen hat das Jahr 2011 zum internationalen Jahr der Wälder erklärt, um auf die Bedeutung der Wälder als Holzlieferanten, Lebensraum und wichtigen Faktor beim Klimawandel hinzuweisen. Gleichzeitig feiert die Internationale Tropenholzorganisation (International Tropical Timber Organization – ITTO) in diesem Jahr ihr 25-jähriges Bestehen. Die Organisation stellt ein zwischenstaatliches Gremium dar, welches das Erreichen eines Gleichgewichts zwischen nachhaltiger Bewirtschaftung, Nutzung und Handel von zertifiziertem Tropenholz zum Ziel hat. Der vorliegende Artikel bietet einen Überblick zur Entwicklung der weltweiten Waldflächen in den vergangenen Jahren.
