Kurz zum Klima: Klimakiller Abholzung?

Abstract

Wälder stellen nicht nur einen umfangreichen Lebensraum zahlreicher Spezies dar, sondern auch eine wichtige Senke für CO2, die weltweit jedoch stark durch Abholzung bedroht ist. Dieser Beitrag zeigt die jährliche Veränderungsrate der Waldflächen im Zeitraum 2000–2005. Es ist erkennbar, dass in den Ländern der Tropen in den letzten Jahren besonders viele Waldflächen verloren gegangen sind. Der Anstieg der Verlustrate ist unter anderem auf den Flächenbedarf für die Errichtung von Plantagen zur Produktion von Biokraftstoffen aus Palmöl, Soja und Zuckerrohr sowie für die Rinderzucht zurückzuführen. Positive Entwicklungen sind dagegen unter anderem in China zu sehen. Dort wurde 2002 ein über zehn Jahre laufendes nationales Aufforstungsprogramm gestartet. In den letzten Jahren nahm die Waldfläche dadurch jährlich um rund 4 Mill. ha zu.
