Une analyse spatiale des mouvements de l’emploi et de la population en France

The residential mobility of households and the location of economic activities are often discussed in the literature which questions their effects on disparities between territories. Employment growth and population flows appear to be linked. They can lead to a concentration of people and activities in some areas whereas others turn into deserts. In this article, we propose to explore the complexity of the link between residential mobility and local employment growth (private sector). We assume that the local dynamics of employment and population can vary according to the socioeconomic profiles of households and according to the nature of employment contracts. Drawing on data from the French Census and DMMO-EMMO (Déclarations mensuelles des mouvements de main-d’œuvre – Enquêtes sur les mouvements de main-d’œuvre), we show that the dynamics of fixed-term contracts jobs are very strongly linked to the movements of the population and, in particular, those of the low-skilled workers. In contrast, residential mobility is only influenced by open-ended contracts jobs. JEL: C31, J61, R11, R23
