Les relations commerciales entre la France et l'Europe depuis 1850. Impact sur la croissance économique de la France

Abstract

This paper aims at understanding how trade relations between France and EU?s countries have historically contributed to French economic growth. Classical and neo-classical theory widely supports that foreign trade is a major factor of growth. However, the impact of foreign trade on economic growth is not clearly established. We focus on the French trade with Europe because of the large openness of French economy and the increasingly strong integration of European countries. Moreover, we choose an historical approach because this way can bring some important insights, which improve our understanding of the relation between openness and economic growth in the case of France since 1850. First, we analyze the evolution of the trade relations between France and EU?s members and French economic growth. Our next step consists in an econometric analysis of the relationship between French trade with Europe and French economic growth using causality and cointegration tests.
