Pourquoi les détenteurs de carte de retrait retirent-ils des espèces aux guichets bancaires ?

Abstract

This paper aims at understanding why cardholders still withdraw cash from bank branches. Differentiating the direct and indirect costs of a withdrawal, we exploit a unique data set of a French representative sample in order to estimate the probability to withdraw cash at a bank branch conditionally to card holding. We show that (i) the indirect costs captured by income, ATM density and distance to bank branch have a statistical significant impact and (ii) the direct costs do not influence the choice of a withdrawal at a bank branch.
