Abstract

In standard trade theory, migration and fdi substitute one another in the international reallocation of labour and capital. However, recent socio-economic literature suggests that migrants can both convey information on their home country (e.g., on business practices or the characteristics of its workforce) and take part in business networks favoring economic transactions between home and host countries. Using bilateral country data on intra-European migration and fdi for the period 1990-2000, we find evidence consistent with dynamic complementarity between skilled emigration and fdi and with contemporaneous substitutability between unskilled migration and fdi. Classification JEL : F22, J61
