Abstract

With the increasing domination of foreign capital in banking sectors of transition countries, it is of the highest interest to investigate the relative performance of domestic-owned and foreign-owned banks in these countries. We therefore aim here to compare the technical efficiency of domestic-owned and foreign-owned banks in Poland and the Czech Republic. The efficiency scores are estimated with the Data Envelopment Analysis (dea). We find that foreign-owned banks are more technically efficient than domestic-owned banks. We furthermore conclude that this advantage in efficiency is not the result of differences in size or activities. Classification JEL : C30, G21, P20
