Ernährungsgerechtigkeit durch souveränen Konsum? Individuelle Bedürfnisse als ökonomische Praxis

Abstract

Managing food insecurity through individual consumption strategies has become a relevant issue in recent years. One fundamental premise here is the sovereignty of the consumer, who is thought of as being able to steer the production and distribution of commodities in a significant way. But the assumption of the “rational shopper” made here misses a key feature about consumption: most desires and decisions of the consumer are tacit and non-reflective. The following paper deals with the concept of „consumer sovereignty“ and focuses the role of individual wants. It argues, that the genesis of desires is inherently economic and that for this reason consumer-driven interventions often fail. The paper concludes by discussing the possibility of taking global responsibility on a local scale.
