Abstract

For interaction work “on and with people”, the operational and technological framework along with its demands on the employees is an increasingly addressed issue. This article focuses on an aspect that has received little attention so far: using the example of caring for seriously neurologically ill patients, it highlights the requirements that arise from the fact that the recipients of personal services are only able to participate in shaping the interaction to a limited extent due to health impairments. In asymmetric communication situations, professional helpers have the role of establishing the client’s ability to interact in the first place. In addition to the technical and organisational conditions of the interaction work, this is to be understood as an independent demand that requires corresponding competences and resources.
