Abstract

In this paper, we focus on aspects of fairness in the gig economy from the perspective of work and organizational psychology. Using our current innovation project FAMOS (“fair work model ‘office services’”), we show and discuss possibilities of what a fair work model in the gig economy could look like. Our project is built on the premise that fairness in the gig economy can be established by offering measures for professional and personal development as well as community building. These measures promote a profitable relationship in terms of a balanced psychological contract between platform providers and gig workers. Community building also seems to be an important tool for increasing the subjective sense of justice and feeling of belonging. Our first findings show that the integration of personnel development into community structures is recommended and that a participatory manner of designing rules within the platform and community plays a crucial role in perceived fairness within the gig economy.
