Abstract

Increasingly complex work processes, the flexibilization and dissolution of boundaries in work as well as its progressive subjectification open up new opportunities for workers, but also entail various risks. This article focuses on the phenomenon of work addiction, a topic that has only been poorly researched in Germany to date. It is hardly known how prevalent work addiction is in Germany and which social groups of employees are most affected by it. Based on representative data from 2017/18 and relying on an internationally established scale for measuring work addiction (Dutch Work Addiction Scale, DUWAS), we show that work addiction is not a marginal phenomenon in Germany. Only weak differences in the prevalence of work addiction by sociodemographic characteristics could be found. However, the prevalence of work addiction is related to characteristics of employment relationship (working hours, self-employment, managerial responsibility), company (company size, works councils) and the occupation employees are engaged in.
