Abstract

In social science discourse and media debates, the Covid-19 pandemic is increasingly described as a disruptive power in regards of the digitalization of labor. While especially the possibilities of home office are addressed within those debates, our article is instead focusing on the concrete and situational re-working of this change by the employees in the course of operational reorganization – including the visible mid-term and possibly long-term consequences for the future design of work. This article portrays those relations in the perspective of managers within different sectors, collected through a qualitative panel. It is shown that the pandemic suspends the structural process of subjectification, while spontaneous subjectification plays a central part in the handling of the pandemic. In the course of this there is a development of contingency competence among the employees, which the corporations want to re-integrate and make it part of structural subjectification.
