Abstract

This article shows for the chemical industry as an example that the challenges of digital transformation can be mastered by the employees’ professional agency. Although chemical industry is characterized by a comparatively high degree of automation and networking, experiential knowledge keeps playing a major role. Based on empirical data, digitalization-related development processes in organization and manufacturing are presented and the limits of digitization are addressed. A special focus is placed on the interpretations and coping strategies of employees in the context of the introduction of new technologies in production.
