Abstract

In the course of the digital transformation, a fundamental change in the structures of companies is postulated in order to ensure better adaptation to a changing environment. New leadership concepts are being proposed in management discourse under the labels “digital leadership” or “agile leadership”. In our paper, we are asking whether a sweeping reorganization of the leadership relationship is actually taking place. Based on 36 interviews with executives from companies operating in the manufacturing and service sectors, we conducted a sociological collective mindset analysis, the results of which are discussed here. Our findings reveal continuities in German managers’ understanding of leadership rather than a fundamental change. Rather, digitalization is reinforcing the assertion of the participative leadership style, a development that empirical studies have traced back to the early 1980s.
