Abstract

With nearly 700,000 employees, the cleaning sector is the most important craft in Germany. This article points out chances and difficulties of professionalization. In the context of the project „Working fields of arrival” (funded by Hans-Böckler-Stiftung) we focus on sectoral transformations and their comparison to the central elements of what is considered tobe „Beruflichkeit“ (vocationalism), trying to show how liberalization tendencies in the skilled trades, high cost pressure and deficiencies regarding the professional self-image are hampering professionalization processes.
